“Take my love, take my land. Take me where I cannot stand” If you know these lyrics, then you are in the right place, and very much in for a treat. Josh Whedon’s Firefly was a Wild West TV show but with spaceships. Firefly only had a small run before it was cancelled by FOX, and that was over 10 years ago. Since then the fans of the TV show have battled hard to try and get the show back on the air, and even pledged money to get a movie made which just shows you the power of the FireFly fans, and so mark this great occasion and to celebrate its 10 year anniversary Josh Whedon has put together Firefly: A Celebration which is a bible to all things FireFly.
When you first get this book you will be amazed at how nice it looks from the outside. The book itself is bound in a brown leather material, which any good FireFly Fan will know is the colour for the brown coats. It really looks like a lot of love and care has gone in to the book; for starters you will be greeted with over 500 pages of full colour. Page after page will suck you in deeper to the ‘verse. The book opens up with an interview with Joss Whedon, the interview is broken down into a QA session. There are some great questions, and it flows very well. After reading the interview, I really get the feeling that everyone loved being a part of this amazing show, and I really started to understand how much Joss Whedon loved producing FireFly, and how to this day he would take the show back up in a heart beat. Following that, the book contains the scripts for every episode that was released. It goes into great depth and as a fan I got to read all my favourite parts and re-live them. Dotted among all this are many different gems of information, some are of the props used in a scene and how they made it and what it was used for. Also, there are sections devoted to the different members of the crew, and it goes into detail about that character along with some great colour photos. I really enjoyed the next part of the book, you get a synopsis of the character and also you get to read from the actor’s point of view. There are also some funny stories from the cast and crew, it really did sound like a family was made on this show. Some of the things they got up to behind the camera are so funny. My favourite is the one about the monkey. I’m not going to spoil it for you, but needless to say it’s very funny and no monkeys were harmed in the joke.
Overall Josh Whedon’s Firefly: A Celebration, is simply an amazing book. It is jammed packed with information that any brown coat/FireFly fan will love. Also you don’t just get this fantasic book, they have issued 9 frameable colour photos of the cast from the show and also an extralarge replica of a note they used for money in the show. For anyone who is into FireFly this is a must for your collection, and even if you’re not a Firefly fan but just like scifi books this will be good for you as well. It really is a must buy!!
